Ushi-Oni Collection

The Ushi-Oni Collection explores themes of brute force, inevitability, and the tension between instinct and control. Inspired by the Ushi-Oni of Japanese folklore—creatures associated with oxen, demons, and coastal or mountainous regions—these masks embody a presence that is neither clever nor elusive, but rather overwhelming.

Unlike spirits of transformation or judgment, Ushi-Oni represent endurance and menace through their sheer existence. Crafted from paper, the collection contrasts physical dominance with material fragility, prompting a reflection on how power persists when stripped of permanence.
